New Restaurant Review – Shrub Chester

I was thrilled to be asked to review this fab new city centre venue with Izzy.

Shrub, a plant based food and drinks hub was due to open in Easter, but sadly Covid struck, and although they opened their kitchen for takeaway services, we were both enormously happy to be able to enjoy the experience of Shrub, right in the heart of the city on Eastgate Street. Their stunning Instagram pics had already whet my appetite, so I was bursting to try the real thing.

Izzy and I were lucky enough to be able to sit on Shrub’s brand new terrace on the rows, with views of the bustling street below us. If you love people watching (and I really do), it’s a super spot. You really feel connected to the city, but the vibes from the terrace make you feel like you are in your own little paradise with deck style seating, hanging shrubs, delicate flower pots and all the while maintaining a safe socially distanced environment. Inside you will find different levels of cosiness with super-cute swing seating, comfy chairs and a delightfully elegant décor to match.

First impressions were first-rate!

Menus were found quickly through QR codes, orders were swiftly taken for drinks, and we opted for bartenders-choice mocktails (a cocktail next time Izzy!). We absolutely loved our cucumber and mint spritz along with a fruity passion fruit number. Both were delicious, a perfect accompaniment to the sunshine.

This was my first experience of a plant-based restaurant, but it most definitely will not be my last. The menu on offer at Shrub is a great read and really makes your mouth water. The choice is terrific, the only downside was that I wanted to try everything! Choices were soon made and to start I opted for the arancini balls, and Izzy the Cauli bites. I’m a lover of arancini, and WOW these didn’t disappoint. Both were wolfed down (in a lady like manner of course) and thoroughly enjoyed – and the Garlic pretzel with garlic butter was off the chart! The portions were plentiful, but not enough to put us off the main event …

For mains we chose the Doner Kebab, and the Beyond Bacon Cheeseburger. I can seriously say the kebab that you get on your way home from a night out will never be the same after you have tried the Shrub version, the other bonus is it is so much healthier! The flavours of every element were just beyond what I expected, and they complimented each other so well. I had made it known that I love a bit of spice in my life when it comes to food, and that kebab had a proper kick. Pretty safe to say that when the mains arrived the only sound coming from our table were ones of enjoyment – and we’re both big talkers! No room for dessert this time, but we did see one pass us as we were leaving, and as tempted as I was I think the high waisted jeans I was wearing would have never forgiven me – definitely next time though.

If you’re looking for a great setting, extremely good value for money, excellent hosts and a place just slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Chester to unwind… then Shrub ticks all of the boxes. It’s a fantastic addition to the Chester food and drink scene, and we’re sure it’s going to be super-popular.

Top tip – Book a table on the terrace for one of the best seats in the city.
