The WLGT ‘Best of Chester’ Festive Bar and Restaurant Guide 🥂🎄

Christmas is looking very different this year – but our super-creative, resilient and innovative bars, restaurants and dining pubs have created a smorgasbord of fabulously festive menus and experiences to ensure we can all still eat, drink and be merry this year.

We may not be able to dance around with a tie on our heads, falling in to Christmas trees or singing our hearts out on the dance floor to ‘All I want for Christmas’ this year – but that won’t stop us making this Christmas a special one.

From brunches to lunches, family dinners to deliciously decadent afternoon teas … it’s official – you really can have a Merry Little Christmas in Chester this year.

The Chester Fields Country Pub & Restaurant

Christmas at The Chester Fields has always been special. From the cheerful decorations to the deliciously festive food, and of course the best team who always get into the Christmas spirit.

Their festive feasting starts in early December when you can book in for a Christmas nibble (2 or 3 course set meal of the best pub grub) or choose from the main menu. Helder’s turkey is always cooked perfectly and his shredded sprouts are to die for – even the most hardened sprout haters with love them!

Sticking to traditions since their opening years ago, The Chester Fields will open on Christmas Day again this year and are now taking bookings from 12pm – 3pm at £70pp. The menu is full of wonderful delights including dishes such as King prawn tails with salmon potato cake, Cauliflower ménage et trois for the vegan option and a delicious Christmas pudding cheesecake.

We’re definitely celebrating the end of 2020 this New Year’s Eve and we think it’s been a must-go-out-with-a-bloody-big-bang kind of year! Join the TCF team from 7pm and enjoy a deluxe gourmet dinner for £65pp – menu highlights include a delicious decadent seafood starter, fillet of beef for main followed by a special cinder toffee dessert. In true TCF style at the stroke of midnight, the skies over the Cheshire plains will be lit up by a spectacular firework display.

We absolutely LOVE their Christmas survival guide – check it out here.

The Black Dog Restaurant & Bar

They’re keeping things very close to their chests but a little red robin has told us to expect something very special from The Black Dog this Christmas. They have WOWED us all year with their super-spectacular surprises – so we cannot wait to escape into Winter Wonderland at The Black Dog this Christmas .. watch this space for details.

Pied Bull

It’s snow wonder that the Pied Bull is so popular at Christmas, for if there was an award for the most beautifully decorated venue in Chester then they would win – hands down. Escape into Winter Wonderland meets the North Pole – and enjoy great festive drinks and nibbles at the same time.

They’re offering a superb-quality winter menu throughout December including locally sourced traditional dishes, delectable desserts & hot drinks (this is the place to enjoy that oh-so-naughty-but-nice hot chocolate with baileys – trust me). The Sunday lunch here is fabulous too – choose from a selection of meats and a choice of drink for just £14.95pp.

As well as their fabulous interior to enjoy, you can take advantage of their fully heated beer terrace for socially distanced drinks, or perhaps indulge in a cheeky little staycation and really make the most of it in one of their stunning bedrooms – they really are amazing!

Open on Christmas Day for drinks from 11am – 10pm – pop in and have a pre or post lunch toast to very special Christmas Day in style. The Pied Bull are open all through December, but be sure to book in quickly.

They have that covered too. If you would prefer to celebrate with a few drinks, then make sure you check out their magnum and seasonal drink options.

Spend Christmas Day with team Goshawk this year and leave the stress of prep and washing up at home (because lets face it – its been stressful enough!). £80pp and includes 3 delicious courses, freshly brewed coffee and mince pies to finish. We love a visit to Duttons, and even more so at Christmas.

It’s not only a fabulous place to celebrate the season with friends and family over some gorgeous food from their festive menu, but also the perfect pit stop for a boozy hot chocolate or coffee after a long days Christmas shopping – and sitting outside on Godstall Lane at Christmas time is a treat all on its own.

The Christmas set menu running alongside their main menu is available as soon as they reopen after lockdown number two. You can choose 2 or 3 courses from £23. Our menu highlight is the potted duck with cinnamon chutney & toasted sourdough.

Don’t forget to try some famous plum pudding ale – it’s pretty special. Oh, and the mulled wine, and the baileys, and the port… you get the gist – it’s always 5 o’clock in the North Pole, right?

The Boathouse

There is no need to get your tinsel in a tangle this Christmas, because The Boathouse have it all under control.

Need somewhere to catch up with friends for great festive food?
Want somewhere cosy and relaxed to raise a glass or two with colleagues?
Need to take your Mother in Law out for a meal to stop her complaining?
Want to dine on Christmas Day with some of the best views of Chester’s stunning River Dee?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then look no further for the perfect place to book this Christmas. Their festive set menu starts as soon as they reopen and runs alongside their main menu. Highlights for us include slow cooked daube of beef, and for those with a sweet tooth the glazed crème brûlée with cinnamon shortbread is a must try.

They are also taking bookings for Christmas Day, so we advise booking in quickly to get the best spot. The turkey they serve here is some of the best we have tried and comes with all the trimmings. And as festive see treats go, how mouth watering does this Christmas Day dessert sound? Bitter chocolate bombe with white chocolate ice cream & vanilla cream sauce. Yes please!

And of you feel you deserve a special little treat this year (and who doesn’t??) then we recommend you book yourselves into one of their gorgeous riverside bedrooms on Christmas Eve and wake up to the sound of the River Dee on Christmas morning. Does it get any better than that? We don’t think so.
