The WLGT Essential Guide to Fathers Day (nearly not) under lockdown

So here’s the thing … what kind of lockdown will we have on Sunday 21st June ? At the time of writing (Sat 13th June), we are still pretty much under lockdown – and by that I mean we can take away some great food and drink from our favourite restaurants, but we can only enjoy it at home – so, seeing as the ‘Save Summer Six’ bunch are pressing for a July reopening of our hospitality sector, then the 21st will still fall into the Dining at Home category.

Now we’ve established that, lets see how we can spoil Dad this Fathers Day (one he’ll never forget for sure!).

Sunday Lunch

We have been so impressed by how well so many of our favourite restaurants adapted to their new takeaway reality, and we have eaten our way round them all! So we think we’re pretty well placed to give you our Top Sunday Roast picks that Dad will love this Fathers Day (we also suggest that you book your time slots as early as possible as they will fill up and sell out);

Chez Jules

Chez Jules may have been a late comer to the takeaway party, but they certainly made up for it with their ‘Chez Jules To You’ service which saw them selling out of their entire menu as soon as they went on sale, in fact – I think they broke the internet!

This is great quality with a really varied menu, plus a special kids menu too.

Da Noi

We are totally in love with Da Noi, which means ‘At Our Home’. Our favourite Italian foodie couple have created a very special dining experience both inside and outside of their restaurant on Bridge Street, and they will be serving their trademark elegant and authentic Italian food on Fathers Day from 5.30pm to 9pm.

And here’s the thing. To celebrate the last day of takeaway today (as they stop service to prepare for their reopening) they will be including a special little surprise gift on their menu from 12noon … now that’s exciting!

The Chester Fields Country Pub & Restaurant

One of the best independent Cheshire pubs around, this one if very close to my heart as I was lucky enough to open it with le boss Mark Jarvo Jarvis back in 2011. They have championed local produce since the very beginning and they still do, and their ‘From Pub to Porch’ menu has gone down as storm in lockdown. Dad will love a proper roast from TCF and they are serving a special gourmet Fathers Day menu with something delicious for everyone in the family.

The Suburbs

Now we know Kingdom is officially the King of Lockdown, and Sunday Roast from The Suburbs is a thing of beauty, but did you know that you can pick up a proper pint at the same time? And that’s not all … takeaway cocktails are also now on the menu, so this one-stop-shop is the perfect choice to keep everyone happy this Fathers Day.

The Black Dog

We love the Black Dog, and Matheus and Bec have stolen our hearts with their amazing food, service and originality. These guys have worked so hard under lockdown and we can’t wait to visit them for a proper dining experience very soon but – until then we’ll happily settle for their first class Sunday Roast plus their desserts are pretty awesome too. You can also pick up a freshly poured pint or two while you’re at it!

They’re also serving some really lovely Hampers so check those out too for a ver special treat!

Ring O Bells / Bells 2 Go

Chef Andrew King and Ian Wade’s team have won so many awards for their great food, and their Sunday Roast is very famous around these parts! Piccolino Chester / Piccolino 2 Go

Oh my! The Takeaway Sunday Roast from Piccolino Chester is the roast that just keeps on giving – we were still eating it on Wednesday! It comes with handy reheating instructions if you’ve collected and live a bit of a distance away – and the gravy is sublime.

Shrub Chester (plant based)

Shrub Chester is a brand new plant based café in Chester which was set to open on Easter weekend. We all know how that ended up but I am very pleased to say that the team managed to open up their kitchen with their super-delicious takeaway menu which has proven to be a real winner, so we’re really looking forward to them opening up fully over the coming weeks. Their Sunday Roast looks pretty tasty, and we recommend the Seitan Shawarma, its devilishly good!

The Rowton Poplars Hotel

A huge well done to these guys, another great quality Chester independent who have embraced the challenge of lockdown and remained positive all the way through with their awesome takeaway service. We’ve had some seriously glowing reports about the quality and value – and they are serving a great Fathers Day menu this weekend as well as a free locally brewed beer from Spitting Feathers when you purchase a gift voucher for £25. Great stuff.

Hanky Panky Pancakes

We have grown to be very fond of Mr & Mrs HP over lockdown, and their infectious personalities and huge dedication to the Chester Indie scene has shone through every single day. Not only do they serve the most indulgent and sublime pancakes ever, but they also serve Panc-tails (you need to see them to believe them) as well as Mrs HP’s new Spice Kitchen.

Drinky Poos at Home

If you think Dad fancies a wee tipple on Fathers Day 2020 (and who can blame him?!?) then we have seriously got you covered in the ‘Drinky Poos at Home’ department too.

1: Suburbs / 2: The Black Dog / Rowton Poplars

Lots of the restaurants and dining pubs serving takeaway menus are also serving takeaway pints (The Suburbs, The Black Dog, Rowton Poplars). Then there our specialist shops offering collection or delivery of cans, bottles and in some cases kegs, so take a look at That Beer Place and Chester Beer and Wine.

There is plenty of great wine to be found too without having to visit your local supermarket. We recommend White Fox Wines and Vinological.

And then there are the cocktails …

Exotic Booze Club have definitely run away with the prize for best cocktail list and largest delivery area of lockdown! Their drinks are beyond super-cool and come with everything you need for your perfect little celebration at home.

The Suburbs are also serving fabulous, ready mixed cocktails and Lono Cove have just launched their range too. Hickory’s have included bottled cocktails on their curbside menu and Prohibition are selling 700ml bottles of their best selling cocktails (the bottles are dipped in wax to seal, which I love!). Red Door have also just launched their frozen cocktail delivery range.

And if you want to WOW Dad with a gourmet gift of plenty, then check out the special celebration hamper from Ristorante Sergios – which will put a huge smile on any Dads face!
