It’s a go to menu item – something that can be explored in many variations, and we believe we have some of the greatest burgers right here in Chester!
To celebrate National Burger Day, we have curated a WLGT Essential Guide to The Best Burgers in town. Apologies in advance for making your mouth water…!
They are a US inspired UK take on a classic New York burger joint in an industrial meets’ vintage interior. They locally source brisket & skirt burgers from master butcher Dave Joinson and their brioche buns from Wallis the Bakers. Our pick is the bacon cheeseburger with, lettuce, tomato and topped with the must try Shed Sauce! Followed by their delicious SFC (Shed fried chicken) burger. Burgers are their specialty, and we recommend you wash one down with one of their famous shakes. Try two burgers for the price of one every Wednesday!
The Chester Fields
They’ve won numerous awards for their use of local produce on their menu. The Chester Fields Grande burger comes stacked with bacon, cheddar, beef tomato, coleslaw & gherkin all in between a toasted brioche bun with a side of French fries. The patty is sourced from their very local butcher Martin Platt of Hayrack Farm Butchers. It’s a staple that will forever be on their menu – and we think its pretty special.
Ring O Bells
They’re kinda famous for their burgers! Our favourite is the Classic Bells Burger – a juicy beef patty, American cheese, gherkin, onion, crisp lettuce, burger sauce, in a brioche bun, with French Fries. They also have a charity chicken burger with a fab hot sauce with donations going to the Children Today charity. They’re known to add a burger special or two, and their fabulous 2-4-1 burger offer is on every Friday!
One of Chester’s newest additions really competes for the top spot! This burger is pretty special. Not only is the Beyond Cheeseburger one of the tastiest in the city, its 100% plant based. Between the bun you will find the beyond patty, crisp head lettuce, salt roasted beef tomato, fried onion, house pickles, cheese sauce, served alongside some French fries. We know how good it is because we’ve tried it (of course!).
Surrounded by the historic Chester city walls, with home cooked food and quality cask ales, The Ship is a family friendly inn that has everything a traditional English pub should have – and a great burger is no exception! The BBQ, cheese & bacon burger comes with a succulent 6oz steak burger, lettuce, tomato, onion, smoky BBQ sauce, bacon & mature cheddar. They run a great gourmet burger offer on a Thursday, where you can get 2-4-1 on all their delicious burgers. Marvellous!
The Black Dog
They’re famous for their dome & dine, modern British cuisine and giant cocktails. One thing that we love about them though is the delicious Black Dog Burger they have on offer. It’s a true stack! Between the brioche bun, you’ll find a steak patty, onion nest, fresh lettuce, Mac sauce and slaw served with skin on French fries.
Duttons / Goshawk / The Boathouse – JWLees Brewery
Named after their iconic brewery chimney tower, Their famous Brewery Tower Burger is stacked high with two juicy beef patties, rich and tasty slow-cooked BBQ pulled beef brisket, crispy dry cured streaky bacon, topped with a layer of melted Cheddar and finished off with a crispy JW Lees ale battered onion ring. Perfect with a refreshing pint of Manchester Craft Lager or their iconic Manchester Pale Ale. Available at all the wonderful JWLee’s sites.
Big Hand Alehouse
Big Hand Alehouse are renowned for their local beers, there’s too many to mention! One thing that they do know, is that a perfect pint needs to have a perfect food partner, and what goes better than a classis burger?! The Big Hand Burger consists of a 7oz homemade beef burger topped with bacon, cheese & red onion marmalade, fries, house slaw and BBQ sauce. Pair this with a pint of choice, and you’re in alehouse heaven!
If you’ve been to Barlounge over the past 20 years you have got to have tried the Barlounge Burger. This one hits the mark every time – a well-marbled beef patty with Cheddar, watercress & red onion jam on a sesame seed brioche bun.
Could this quite possibly be one of the longest stranding burgers in Chester?
P.S. We couldn’t not mention the other burgers on the Barlounge menu – The KFC Burger, Korean fried chicken and the vegan Garden Patch Burger are both pretty special. And don’t forget the trio of mini-burgers, a go-to for most of us after a few drinks on the terrace in the evening.
America was practically built on burgers and the team at Hickory’s are on a mission to try one in every state. They have a super-stacked collection of their favourites so far on their menu – all with a Hickory’s twist.
From the Famous Hickory’s Burger with classic beef patties and the ever popular Southern Fried Chicken Burger, and for those of you who can’t choose between beef & chicken – have both with The Bird & Beast, and of course a Veggie Burger made with a roast soy patty and a magic-dusted mushroom.
But the ultimate burger has got to be The Go Big or Go Home Burger…
It’s probably quicker to tell you what’s NOT in the ‘Go Big or Go Home Burger’ but here we go anyway… it’s simply Hickory’s in a bun!
It’s packed with 2 prime-beef patties, southern fried chicken, streaky bacon, bourbon-glazed brisket, a golden hash brown, all-American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles & Hickory’s burger sauce.
Who’s Going Big? Who’s Going Home?
Their award-winning pub, bar and restaurant serves up great, freshly prepared, locally sourced food alongside a fabulous range of cask ales and a superb selection of wines & spirits. And The Faulkner Steak Burger is one of the tastiest around! It’s topped with Colliers cheddar, smoked bacon, lettuce, onion & tomato, Dijon mayo on a brioche bun with a side of seasoned fries & pickle.
It’s not just a burger at Nice Bites, it’s an experience. They just simply season all their meat, cook until tender & juicy and let the delicious flavours speak for themselves. It’s not just a menu item to them, they really do put a lot of effort & creativity in to producing each one. We are only shouting about one today though! And that is the ‘Don’t Mind If I Wagyu’ burger. Boy, oh boy! Think award winning Welsh reared wagyu beef, cheese, Nice Bites burger sauce, leaf tomatoes, onions & pickles on a toasted brioche bun! Now doesn’t that sound mouth-watering!
If you have been to The Suburbs you will know that it’s one of the most down to earth places to sit and relax with food, drink and great service. Which makes it the most perfect setting to get really stuck into a good burger! The king of burgers at this eatery, we think, is the McThenga Burger. This beauty has a 10oz Beef patty, fresh salad, beef tomatoes, onion rings, burger relish, crispy bacon, melted cheese and onion slices, in a brioche bun & a side of proper chips. If you don’t want the juice running down your chin in the bar, order it to takeaway.
The Pied Bull Chester
We absolutely LOVE The Pied Bull! Its a great quality independent hotel, bar and restaurant and claims to be one off the oldest Inns in the city. They specialise in pub classics – everything is freshly prepared and they have a section of their menu specially dedicated to Burgers! Choose from the classic beef burger, the crispy buttermilk chicken, the grilled halloumi – and you can even make them really dirty with the addition of chilli con carne or BBQ beef brisket. Awesome!
