EXPERIENCE CHESTER’S DARK PAST IN A NEW CITY CENTRE ATTRACTION OPENING FOR HALLOWEEN

… a special history / scare experience introduced by Chester Life Story

Grim Chester is a new tour-led attraction opening on October 25th which will bring alive Chester’s dark secrets, history and stories in a theatrical and fun way – ideal for families as well as offering adult-only tours.

You know about the Roman’s but what about the other characters from Chester who helped to shape the city and whose dark spirits still linger in corners waiting to tell their grim stories.

By gathering together Chester’s darkest history Grim Chester has created a guided tour experience to haunt you, amuse you and to teach you what lurks in the many cobbled streets and behind many imposing doors.

Witches, executioners, the plaque doctor, sinister landlords, evil puppeteers, criminals and stories of murders will all be revealed in an entertaining yet slightly sinister way!

Tours last one hour and it is recommended that places are pre-booked to secure a place.

WHAT IS GRIM CHESTER

The theatrical characters will lead you on a one-hour tour where they will reveal their own dark past, but also tell you stories to make you shiver all in a setting which is by itself chilling.

The setting is on the incredible Medieval Rows in the Grade II listed St Michael’s Church which is full of spirits, shrines and plaques as well as a secret crypt.

After the tour there will also be time to explore the grim museum artefacts we have gathered and the chance to play and interact with history – stick your head in a pillory or wear a scold’s bridle (sometimes called a witches bridle)

Our tours are suitable for families (age 7+ is recommended), but adult only tours for groups can also be arranged. Private hire and children’s parties are also available and walking tours of the city at night are being developed to be launched later in the year.

Dates available are Oct 25, 26, 31 and Nov 1st 6pm for one hour, bookings need to be made in advance.

Grim Chester has been developed by Chester-based Big Heritage

We are a team of archaeology, history and educational professionals that harness the awesomeness of Britain’s past to educate, inform and inspire. Having developed Chester A Life Story in St Micheal’s Church, we realised that visitors enjoyed the more macabre and dark stories about the city.

We believe that history and archaeology can be tools for making a difference in people’s lives. This can be as simple as offering opportunities for people to simply experience heritage, or as complex as bringing whole communities together or as a means of tackling issues as diverse as climate change or food poverty.

We are a full-service heritage social enterprise – so if you’re looking for something that involves engaging people with the past, then the chances are, we can help you. Please explore our website to learn a bit more about us. www.bigheritage.co.uk

Dean Paton, Big Heritage Creator and CEO said: “Grim Chester reveals more about Chester’s history and has been developed to give people more of what they like and have asked for. The dark side of the city seems to fascinate people and by developing attractions and working with the public, we have slowly developed a concept which moves on from teaching about history, to experiencing it in a fun and interactive way.

“Our attraction includes museum exhibits to teach stories, but we also tell stories using actors who will interact and entertain visitors. The idea is simple and hopefully people will enjoy it as well as learn about the dark past of Chester, which can be very surprising. We have uncovered horrifying stories which need sharing and will hopefully bring a new activity to attract new people to the city.”
