Join the Veganuary Movement with a little help from WLGT

There is no doubt that Veganism has taken the world by storm and we certainly don’t need to labour that point – but do we really understand why its so important and exactly what the health benefits are?

The Vegan Society certainly have some of the answers, and have been spreading the vegan message since 1944 claiming to have helped make veganism what it is today; a thriving lifestyle choice for everyone.

They explain how a Vegan diet is rich in calcium with the importance of beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts and seeds in a healthy diet, as well as providing plenty of vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3 fat and iodine. A vegan diet also eliminates high fat and high sugar processed foods, which has got to be good for all of us.

So we know it’s super healthy, and we also know that strict veganism is incredibly good for the environment on many levels – so even if we can’t commit to true veganism for ever and ever, surely a short stint will make a difference – not only to ourselves but also to our environment?

So we think Veganuary is a good idea for everyone, and by living and working in and around Chester, you have some excellent choices as to how you can support the Veganuary movement – without compromising on the great quality food that you are used to enjoying in some of your favourite restaurants and dining pubs.

Hypha Restaurant & Bar have enjoyed a fabulous story throughout 2019 including entry into the Michelin Guide 2020. This purely plant-based venue opened to huge acclaim, and owner Nik Friar knows a thing or two about the benefits of becoming Vegan, as we found out when we interviewed him late last year – take a look here;

Hypha owner Nik Friar is interviewed by WLGT Editor Izzy Grey

Hypha will obviously be celebrating Veganuary all month long, and they have also teamed up with The Cheshire Dining Experience at the end of this month for a special 2 night Popup (30th & 31st Jan) – to bring you the Perfect Plant-based Dining Experience delivered by two of our favourite local superstar Chefs.

Next up is Wood Chester in Hotel Indigo. We have been working with Masterchef UK winner Simon Wood for the last 6 months and quite frankly, we can’t get enough of him. Apart from being a thoroughly nice guy, Simon has enriched the Chester Food & Drink landscape with his take on Unintimidating Fine Dining – his food is both delicious and great value – and it seems that lots of you feel the same way as his new Wood Chester restaurant has gone from strength to strength since opening last Summer. In terms of a Veganuary entry – his Vegan Burger is divine and always available on the Lounge Menu. Get yourself booked in this Veganuary for a WOOD Vegan Burger – you won’t be disappointed.

If you live or work close to the North Wales border and want to indulge in a bit of Veganuary culinary action, then we recommend you head straight to The Golden Lion in Rossett. Not only is this one of our favourite pubs, but they always include a couple of super-tasty vegan dishes on their menu and these three are full of flavour; Butternut Ghobi Dhansak curry with flatbread and rice, Salad bowl with vegan mozzarella and Aubergine & lentil chilli. Manager Allan and the team are ready and waiting to take great care of you.

Here are some more of our favourite restaurants who always include Vegan specials on their menus, and where you will find delicious plant-based dishes throughout the year and especially during Veganuary;

Faulkner Chester have been producing superb award-winning food for years and Owner Darren Lea is one of our favourite local Chefs. Their Roasted cauliflower Thai red curry is worth a visit all on its own and a very worthy entry into our Veganuary hotlist!
